We are residents and business people who live in Bragg Creek and Redwood Meadows, Alberta. We've tried a variety of things to get the attention of the government to tell them that we want an end to logging in Kananaskis. We go to public meetings, we write to politicians and the media. And, we do a lot of talking. We're not acting on behalf of any organization, but we are pretty well organized and determined to make this work.
We think it is time to act and we're not interested in lying down in front of bulldozers or stapling ourselves to trees. We sure don't want to go to jail for expressing our opinions.
So we came up with this idea as a way to encourage others to do something that we hope will attract some attention.
Help Save Kananaskis
If you know of places where we can distribute tags or if you know a group that could set up a display on May 12, please contact us. As we're not an established organization, we don't have a membership to support us. If you can, please do.
Why May 12?
May Day, the first of May, fell 11 days later before the change in the calendar in 1752.
On that day the young men and women went to the woods to participate in the rites of the renewal of life. They went a-maying on May Day Eve and returned at dawn on May Day, carrying green boughs of branches freshly bursting into leaf as tokens of the revival of nature that was happening all around them.
Earth Day
It wasn't a typical Earth Day celebration, but about 12 people got together to make tags. With chain saws roaring and paint sprayers hissing, we got about 700 tags in various states of completion. We will have 1,500 tags to start and we'd love to make more to meet the demand.
